On September 19, a Lithuanian customs officer working for the EU mission to Kosovo (EULEX) was killed, and his Czech colleague was wounded, when unknown gunmen opened fire on their vehicle on a road close to Zvečan, in a Serbian majority area of northern Kosovo, reports Koha Ditore.
It is the first time that a member of EULEX on active service has been killed since the beginning of the mission in 2008, notes the Kosovar daily, which adds that it was also the first incident to take place following EULEX’s decision to allow its customs officers to travel by road. Up until last June, they made use of helicopters.
Koha Ditore points out that —
… representatives of the EU, the United States, Kosovo and Serbia have affirmed that the attack will not prevent the implementation of the accord on the normalisation of relations which is now underway.
In the morning of September 20, a small bomb blast in the Serbian district of Mitrovica, the main Serbian town in Kosovo, did not cause any injuries, reports the daily’s website.
