British prime minister David Cameron’s “strategy on Europe was in disarray” on 23 June after his Polish allies accused him of “incompetence” in a secretly taped rant, writes i.
In conversations revealed in Polish magazine Wprost, Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski accuses Cameron of trying to appease Eurosceptics with “stupid propaganda” in what was “either a very badly thought through move, or, not for the first time a kind of incompetence in European affairs.”
For i, the attack underlines Cameron’s isolation among EU leaders after his “embarrassing defeat in his lonely attempt to stop the veteran federalist Jean-Claude Juncker being chosen as the next president of the European Commission” at the European Council of 26-27 June.
The paper notes that Cameron has no intention of giving in, predicting the PM will use the summit to
warn them [other EU leaders] that Mr Juncker’s appointment would increase the chances of Britain voting to leave the EU in the 2017 in/out referendum he has promised.
