In a ruling delivered on June 19, the higher administrative court in Schleswig, northern Germany, withdrew an authorisation to store nuclear waste at a temporary site in Brunsbüttel. In the light of the decision, the fate of nine containers of waste from a nearby power station, which has been inactive since 2011, remains uncertain, reports Tagesspiegel.
The German government is currently involved in negotiations on legislation to create a deep storage repository, which is to be presented to parliament next week. The goal of the new law is to establish an alternative to the Gorleben storage site in Lower Saxony, which has criticised over safety concerns.
