Kohl, Angela Merkel's mentor, is considered to be the "father of German reunification" of October 3 1990, and one of the great European leaders who had a vision for Europe. His protegé must now face the main challenge of her term as Chancellor: how to avoid disintegration of a European Union in crisis.
