'Yes we can'

2015 was marked by a wave of refugees coming to Europe not seen since the Second World War: over a million people arrived on the Old Continent, mainly from Syria, Africa and South Asia.

Faced with this humanitarian challenge, European countries reacted randomly. German chancellor Angela Merkel stood out with her welcoming policy, for which she was rewarded by being chosen as person of the year by Time magazine, while being harshly criticised within her own political party.
