“A year after it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 2012, the EU has grown more and more isolationist in its bid to prevent the arrival of immigrants. Syrians who are fleeing the war are also being kept out,” complains Die Tageszeitung.
The Berlin daily calls on Europe to respond to the misery of Syrian refugees —
While Europe is preparing to celebrate Christmas, the Syrians are enduring the third [consecutive] year of bloody civil war. More than 2 million people have fled to neighbouring countries to escape the violence. [...] where they are waiting in overflowing refugee camps, with no prospects for themselves or their children. Europe could do more to help them. But the European Union appears to be too preoccupied with with its own problems to be capable of any real compassion. [...] But if Europe refuses to welcome the immigrants, it should at least do something to alleviate the worst of the misery.
