Ósmego października 17 krajów strefy euro zainaugurowało Europejski Mechanizm Stabilizacyjny (EMS), fundusz w wysokości 500 miliardów euro przeznaczony w szczególności na pomoc dla tych państw, które borykają się z problemami finansowymi. Umożliwi on dokapitalizowanie ich sektora bankowego bez konieczności zaciągania przez nie kredytów na rynku.
