"Police by day, mason by night": Lidové noviny sums up the appeal made on March 1 by police unions to take on second jobs. Following a ten percent drop in their salaries, the police want “to be able to pick up a little extra money from manual labour on the side," said a union delegate quoted by the newspaper. For now, the list of authorised professional activities outside hours of service is very limited, and the police are having to moonlight in the shadow economy. They are asking to be allowed to switch their uniforms for the overalls and smocks of truck drivers, plumbers and accountants.
