Narodil se v roce 1973 v Istanbulu, Eyüp Can studoval žurnalistiku a politické vědy na Harvardu. Mezi lety 1994 a 2004 pracoval v deníku Zaman, předtím než se stal šéfredaktorem hospodářského deníku Referans.
