Caterpillar, the world's largest construction equipment manufacturer, announced on February 28, that it was to cut 1,400 jobs from its Gosselies site, close to Charleroi, in Belgium.
The rate of unemployment in the region is already 20 per cent, double the national average.
The firm is just the latest in list of high profile employers such as steelmaker ArcelorMittal and car manufacturer Ford to announce job losses.
