The 1st of July in Romania is a red-letter day of “changes, reductions, increases”, announces the Romanian daily Adevarul on its front page, recapping reasons to be cheerful : petrol prices down 5%, mobile phone roaming charges likewise slashed, the ceiling on reimbursements for prescription drugs has been raised – benefitting 550,000 pensioners –, electricity charges are stable. The other much-awaited good news is that Romanians “no longer need a police officer to draw up a report” on minor traffic accidents, delights Adevarul, while deploring the postponement of mandatory home-owner insurance. Another piece of bad news though: the markup on tobacco products.
