Following a January 8 meeting in Berlin with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel organised by the daily Die Welt, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said his country was making "enormous efforts" to get out of the crisis. In particular, he referred to the "systematic measures" implemented by his government to restore order to Greece's finances, as demanded by the creditor countries, led by Germany.
