10 years already: The closure of the Sangatte centre
Ten years after the closure of its refugee camp, there are no more migrants in Sangatte in north-western France. Opened in 1999 for Kosovar refugees, the centre housed up to 2,000 people, in difficult conditions, and was the source of tension between the France and a United Kingdom which did not want to take the migrants in. Today, those who attempt to cross the English channel — mainly Afghans, Iraqis and Sudanese — camp nearby at Calais, a dozen kilometres away.
