The EU should should put pressure on African nations that do not accept migrants returning to the continent after failing to win asylum in Europe, according to a new Maltese proposal.
Under the scheme, African nations, which are not at war and refuse to accept the temporary travel documents issued to unsuccessful asylum seekers, should have their development aid payments cut.
The Mediterranean island is struggling to cope with an influx of African migrants seeking to enter the EU and such a measure would allow the “EU exert its diplomatic strength,” writes the Times of Malta.
