Petro Poroshenko, the owner of the the Roshen Confectionary Corporation, won the 25 May presidential election with more than 54 per cent of the vote, while operations by Ukrainian government forces against pro-Russian separatists continued in Donetsk in the East of the country. “For the first time in the history of independent Ukraine, the president was elected on the first round”, notes Den, which argues that “Ukraine has chosen: peace in the East, the elimination of terrorism, the liberation of occupied Crimea, a European Ukraine, and more importantly, to change [the country's] establishment.”
