Special units of the Belgian federal police launched a vast operation on April 16 targeting radical Islamists, notably in Brussels, Antwerp and Vilvoorde.
Police organised a total of 48 raids at the homes people believed to be involved in terrorist activity. The suspects are allegedly responsible for sending young Belgians to Syria, where they provide support for Islamic militias fighting the Bashar al-Assad regime.
Six people, including Fouad Belkacem, a former spokesperson for radical Islamist group Sharia4Belgium were arrested.
