“Four weeks after general elections, the way has been cleared for negotiations between the SPD [Social Democratic Party] and the CDU [Christian Democratic Union]. No more strategic games, it is time for serious business” writes Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The daily reports that at this weekend’s SPD conference in Berlin, 229 party representatives and officials voted in favour of negotiations, while 31 voted against.
The next step will be a vote by the members of the SPD, which will be held between now and mid-December. Depending on the outcome of this vote, the party leadership is hoping that negotiations with current Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU will be concluded by the end of the year.
