The European Parliament has rejected former Slovenian prime minister Alenka Bratušek’s nomination to oversee the European Commission’s energy portfolio by a large majority on 8 October, reports Delo, with 112 votes against, 13 in favour and 2 abstentions.
Bratušek is thus the sole candidate of the team formed by Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker to have been voted down. The Slovenian daily explains that if her hearing was disappointing, she has also paid the price of political bargaining between the European right and left.
As a consequence, current Slovenian prime minister Miro Cerar has indicated the country will propose a new candidate — a man or a woman — “within two or three days”.
