Regular reader Atlantis recommends an opinion article on sovereign debt, by Nikolaus Piper in the Munich daily Süddeutsche Zeitung. Atlantis writes:

In this article German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble is quoted as replying “Hopefully never” to the question: “When will the German government have paid back its debts?” The article claims that countries with a stable economic performance, like Germany or the US, ought to run up debt and warns against the populist hysteria about sovereign debt. Presseurop readers may find this interesting since it presents a totally different attitude to the one we normally expect from Germany.
