On August 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the national health agency has approved the first coronavirus vaccine for widespread use. Called "Sputnik V", it was greeted with some scepticism by the scientific community, as the vaccine had not undergone the extensive testing necessary to verify its effectiveness and lack of risk to humans.
