A joint announcement made by a group of European football clubs (six teams from England, three from Spain and three from Italy) about the launch of a “Super League”, an exclusive elite tournament rivalling the Champions’ League, has provoked an outcry within the European football community. 

UEFA and several national federations denounced this “cynical” plan and threatened to exclude teams including their players that will participate in the Super League from other competitions.
