On August 12, Romanian President Traian Băsescu declared that 2013 would be the last year in which Hungarian politicians would be allowed to do as they wished in Romania, reports Jurnalul Național.
Băsescu’s remarks came in the wake of comments made by the leader of Hungary’s far-right Jobbik party, Gábor Vona, who affirmed, on the occasion of a visit to Harghita, Transylvania, that his organisation would not shy away from conflict to defend the rights and interests of the Hungarian minority in the Romanian region.
President Băsescu announced that the Romanian state “will take the initiative to rein in Budapest”, because “this year, Hungarian politicians have gone too far.” He added that “Budapest’s aggressive policy” with regard to neighbouring countries that are home to Hungarian minorities— notably Slovakia and Romania — is very disturbing.
