‘A new giant in the mobile phone sector’

“A major merger in the German mobile phone sector: Dutch telecommunications firm KPN is selling its subsidiary E-plus for €5bn to O2 Germany, which belongs to the Spanish firm Telefónica,” reveals German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung.

With 43 million clients, O2 thus aims to become the leading provider in Germany. Shareholders, as well as European and German competition authorities, have yet to ratify the merger, the paper notes.

If the operation is approved, clients should expect a rise in prices, according to the daily. As for the German providers Deutsche Telekom and Vodafon, O2 would represent a “new powerful competitor”, explains Süddeutsche Zeitung.
