In the wake of a general strike called on July 16 and against a backdrop of closed town halls, the parliament is set to vote on finance ministry legislation which will usher in radical change in the public sector.
On the eve of the vote, reports Eleftherotypia, the two parties of the ruling coalition, New Democracy (ND) and the socialist party (PASOK), rejected an attempt to have the text declared unconstitutional filed, on 16 July, by the radical left-wing party SYRIZA and the Independent Greeks party ANEL.
Town halls which have been angered by the axing of units in local administrations as well as changes to the status of school caretakers and municipal police gathered outside parliament on the morning of July 17. A further demonstration is planned to coincide with the vote this evening.
