A one word hashtag in the pro-government Turkish daily Star sums up the response of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his supporters to the demonstrators who, for nearly a week, have been calling for his resignation.
Erdoğan and his backers reacted by attacking social media. The PM called Twitter "the greatest threat to society," because it is used by youthful opponents to spread their message.
Photoshopped pictures of him are being circulated as part of a campaign to boost his popularity. In some, Erdoğan is shown with Turgut Özal (former PM and president until 1993 and who's pro-free trade stance Erdoğan claims to continue) and Adnan Menderes (Kemalist PM hanged during the 1961 military coup).
