
On February 27, the constitutional court struck down a law granting immunity to senators and MPs which had been approved by the ruling USL coalition in a vote in parliament in January.
The legislation had given parliamentarians the right to ignore the decisions of the National Integrity Agency (ANI), in particular involving cases of conflict of interest.
President Traian Băsescu, who is in conflict with the USL, welcomed the court’s decision with a resounding “Yes!”. Romania’s parliament will now have to endorse a new text on the status of its members, which complies with the court’s decision.
