A poor showing by the EU’s preferred candidate, outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, in Italian general and senatorial elections "will call into question Merkel’s austerity policy," argues the Spanish business daily.
With only 10.1 per cent in the lower house of parliament and 9.1 per cent in the Senate, Monti finished in fourth position, far behind the left-wing and right-wing coalitions led by Pier Luigi Bersani and Silvio Berlusconi, and Beppe Grillo’s Five Stars Movement.
The result has led to a resurgence of uncertainty on Wall Street and European markets, notes the newspaper.
