On February 17, the leader of of the ruling centre-right Democratic Rally (DISY), Nicos Anastasiades, won a major victory in the first round of presidential elections, scoring 45.46 per cent of the vote.
In the February 24 second round, he will face a run-off with Stavros Malas (who scored 26.91 per cent), the candidate put forward by AKEL (the communist party), which is also the party of outgoing President Dimitri Christofias. Outsider Giorgios Lillikas, a candidate supported by the Movement for Social Democracy (EDEK) has now been eliminated, having scored 24.93 per cent of the vote.
