“They assassinated Ernest Valko,” reports SME in the wake of the 8 November murder of the well-known and “enormously influential” Slovak lawyer. Valko, an associate of the new government with particularly close ties to Prime Minister Iveta Radičová’s Christian-democratic party (SDKU), was shot in the heart in his home in suburban Bratislava. “Valko was a larger than figure in national politics. He was one of those responsible for establishing our constitution, modernising our laws and promoting the civic development of this country. The bullet in his heart is like a shot in the heart of Slovakia,” notes the newspaper.
