On July 17, the European Commissioner for Justice, Viviane Reding, presented a plan for the creation of a European prosecutor’s office to more effectively fight fraud against the European budget, reports Die Presse.
The European prosecutor’s office could pursue anyone who misappropriates European funds and bring them before national courts in EU states.
In so doing, it could bridge the gap between member state justice systems, whose jurisdiction is limited by national borders and EU institutions.
”As it stands, less than one in two investigations for fraud results in a judgement,” explains Die Presse. According to Commission estimates, approximately €500m of taxpayers money is lost to fraud every year.
