Adevărul reports that European People's Party MEP László Tőkés, who is credited as "the man who sparked the 1989 revolution," has been voted in as one of the European Parliament's 14 vice-presidents. The savage response to demonstrations to prevent Tőkés from being transferred from his parish in Timisoara was one of the key factors which led to the downfall of the Ceauşescuregime. Tőkés, a Protestant pastor and the President of the Hungarian National Council of Transylvania, will take over the vice-president's post vacated by Pál Schmitt, who was elected Speaker of the National Assemby of Hungary on 14 May.
