Having served nine months of a two-year sentence delivered when he was found guilty of corruption charges last summer, the former social democrat prime minister (2000-2004) was released from prison on March 18.
The left-wing daily presents his conditional release as a "victory" for the man who was a "political prisoner under the regime of [President] Băsescu," which has finally come in the wake of the "judicial masquerade" orchestrated by his "torturers".
Social democratic leaders, including Prime Minister Victor Ponta, welcomed the announcement of his release, which has been perceived as a sign that Năstase will return to politics. However, he is still being investigated by another corruption inquiry.
