At a meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers on June 24 in Luxembourg, Germany’s Guido Westerwelle announced that he was in favour of a resumption of negotiations with Turkey, reports FAZ
“We should also take into account the long-term strategic interests of the EU,” he added. Several of his counterparts are also keen to open a new chapter in negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU “notwithstanding, or perhaps even because of the violent crackdown on protests in the country,” explains the daily.
Along with the Netherlands, Germany was one of the strongest opponents of a resumption of negotiations, and openly critical of the violence in Turkey.
