De Guindos in Brussels

"We have restored the Spanish economy!"

Just like the whole Spanish Government, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos is trying to convince the EU, its partners and the markets that structuralreforms made by Spain should allow the country to avoid needing a bailout and allow it to benefit from lower borrowing rates.

The painting is the result of "the worst restoration job of all time" carried out by an amateur artist in her 80s who attempted to restore the fresco Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) by Elias Garcia Martínez at the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Borja, northeast Spain. Her efforts have become an Internet hit, with dozens of spoofs circulating the web.
