On 18 April, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu won the presidential election in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Kibris reports that the nationalist candidate obtained 50.4 % of the vote, a clear victory over outgoing president Mehmet Ali Talat. The Lefkosia daily also notes that under pressure from the Turkish government in Ankara, Eroglu has pledged to continue negotiations on the reunification of the island undertaken by his predecessor. On the other side of the border in, O Philephteros takes the view that the "illegal election" of Eroglu to lead the "puppet regime" in the "occupied territories," will have a "negative impact" on the process of reconciliation between the two parts of the island.
