On its front page, the large circulation daily cites the above words of Turkish President Abdullah Gül, intended as a warning to Prime Minister Erdogan that he can not do as he pleases just because he is backed by a comfortable majority in parliament. Gül, who is reputed to be more moderate, points out that “criticism and different opinions can also be expressed in other ways apart from elections, notably by peaceful demonstrations”.

The president adds that “the message [from the demonstrators] has been understood”. On its front page, Posta also cites the reaction from Erdogan, who is currently on an official visit to Morocco. Erdogan claimed to be unaware of the “the message being referred to” — a remark that has fueled speculation that the Justice and Development Party (AKP) may be divided over the issue of the response to recent events in Istanbul.
