Modelled on the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, this independent Austrian liberal/centre-left newspaper was founded in 1988 by journalist/editor Oscar Bronner who had also created the business journal Trend and the political magazine Profil. This conspicuously salmon-pink paper publishes a wide variety of lively supplements.
Der Standard’s website has consistently jockeyed for position as the news site of record for the German-speaking world. It posts videos on current events as well as an audio news service, plus a link to dieStandard.at - a site wholly devoted to women.
