“In recent years, the crisis has not only led Europeans to rein in their appetite for consumer goods, it has also had an impact on their desire to have children,” points out the daily.
According to the European Commission’s latest quarterly report on the social situation on the continent, following an increase from 1.46 to 1.6 children per woman between 2002 and 2008, the average fertility rate in the EU declined to 1.57 children per woman in 2011.
“This latest development is a serious blow for countries which already had low fertility rates,” notes Tomas Sobotkan, a researcher at the Vienna Institute for Demography, who is quoted by the newspaper.
