National subsidy schemes for the renewable energy sector have created an imbalance, which has weakened the competitiveness of traditional thermal energy, according to the European Commission.
As a result, Brussels plans to regulate and harmonise national subsidies to green energy and to define a European subsidy structure by 2020.
