On the eve of the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius the European Commission has proposed to abolish visa requirements for Moldovan holders of biometric passports.
The proposal, which Internal Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström claims “will further facilitate people-to-people contacts and strengthen business, social and cultural ties between the European Union and Moldova,” must now be discussed by Parliament and the European Council. The final decision could be taken before the end of the current legislature in March 2014.
As Adevărul Moldova points out , the change would mean that Moldovans could travel freely in the Schengen Area and in countries that are candidates to join Schengen.
