On January 24, the European Parliament’s committee for Internal Market and Consumer Protection is expected to give an intial opinion on a proposed directive on public procurement which was presented in December 2011.
The EU Commission for Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier, is planning to give local governments the option of opening up water distribution to the private sector. Local authorities will still have a final say on whether to continue with a public system or to entrust distribution to the private sector, however, critics of the plan have warned of rampant privatisation.
