“The attempt by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his ministers to justify the savage behaviour of police at the Gezi Park demonstrations has not succeeded,” explains Cumhuriyet in the wake of the meeting in Ankara of EU ambassadors and Egemen Bağış, the Turkish Minister for European Union and chief negotiator in accession talks.
The Kemalist daily points out that, in view of the present context, the EU has announced that accession negotiations will not resume before the release of the European Commission’s annual report on Turkey’s progress towards EU membership, due in October.
