Facing an unprecedented refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, EU leaders decided in Brussels on 23 April to triple the budget of maritime border monitoring mission Triton, as well as to wage war to migrant smugglers.
Triton, whose mandate was not extended to search and rescue missions as aid organisation had hoped, is now set to receive €9m per month from the EU budget. In addition, EU leaders —

have asked Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative, to propose actions allowing to capture and destroy the smugglers’ vessels before they can be used […], in accordance with international law”.
