2025 looks set to be yet another of the hottest summers on record. It's a stark reminder that our planet is warming fast. Governments and ordinary citizens are having trouble keeping up. One purported solution was meant to be green finance, which would reward projects that serve the environment and social goals – a win-win for both economic development and sustainability.
However, since the 1980s and the financialisation of the world economy, Big Money has learned that every loophole in the law is a chance to make a quick buck. Taking advantage of flaws in the rules, regulatory oversight, and the good faith of ethically-minded investors, the financial giants have continued to invest in precisely the businesses that are worsening our climate crisis.
What are those loopholes? How do conscientious investors end up bankrolling the oil giants? What tricks did the financial sector use to get here? How can citizens protect themselves? And what role can the press play?
We've discussed all this and more with investigative reporters Stefano Valentino and Giorgio Michalopoulos, who have dissected the dark underbelly of green finance for Voxeurop and won several awards for their work.
