16 June marked a turning point for Moldova. With the approval of the EU-27, EU membership negotiations were officially opened, alongside those for Ukraine. The first phase will focus on the rule of law, democratic institutions, and fundamental rights.
Since its invasion of Ukraine, and later its meddling in Moldovan elections, Russia is widely seen as a menace in this former Soviet republic. On the EU side, Moldova is expected to join the “Democratic Shield” initiative launched by the European Commission. But public opinion nonetheless remains divided in certain regions of Moldova.
So how exactly do Moldovans perceive the idea of joining the EU? How are they taking Russia's interference? What is the strategy of Maia Sandu's government? How are reforms going? What is the situation in the pro-Russian enclave of Transnistria, which borders Ukraine? And where does Gagauzia stand?
We discussed these issues with journalists Oxana Bodnar and Anita Bernacchia. A conversation moderated by Catherine André and Gian-Paolo Accardo.
