The Brussels MEPs and the relocation to Strasbourg
That is going to cost us a fortune
On November 20, MEPs adopted a resolution by 483 votes to 141 (with 34 abstentions), which states that the European Parliament "would be more efficient, financially rational and environmentally friendly if it only sits in one place."
According to the resolution's authors, notes Le Soir –
the relocation of thousands of elected officials, journalists and translators between the two cities, which are 435km apart, costs around €150m per year and causes the emission of 19,000 tonnes of CO2.
The daily points out that although
the European Parliament has a seat in Strasbourg, only 12 four-day plenary sessions are held there each year. The rest of the time, members work in Brussels, in committees or political groups.
