On the eve of taking the reins of the European Council’s rotating presidency, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on 30 June the creation of an alliance between his party, Fidesz (national-conservative), the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ, far-right) and the Czech ANO 2011 (right-wing populist), in the hope of forming a new political group in the European Parliament. Called the "Patriots of Europe" and led by three parties that saw good results in the 2024 European elections, the group hopes to take the lead among the radical right.
According to our colleagues at Domani, the creation of the new group was negotiated with Marine Le Pen, whose Rassemblement National came out on top in the first round of the French parliamentary elections on 30 June. The aim is apparently to attract defectors from the Identity and Democracy group (ID, far right), who were unable or unwilling to join the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). The latter is usually home to the representatives of the hard right in the European Parliament, and is currently co-chaired by the party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (Fratelli d'Italia, far right).
