At the demography summit held in Berlin on May 14, Angela Merkel asked her government to facilitate the mobility of workers within the EU.
“Because we will have six million fewer workers in 2025, we should be open to young people who want to come to our country,” said the chancellor.
Germany offers good conditions for immigrants but suffers from a reputation of being a standoffish country, explains Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. German Interior Minister Hans Peter Friedrich is mainly counting on an influx of skilled workers from the countries of southern Europe.
