Gaddafi’s fear of a black Europe

Published on 30 November 2010 at 11:04

“Gaddafi: Stop the migration or Europe turns black”, headlines the Times of Malta, summarising comments the Libyan leader threw in the face of European leaders in Tripoli for the third EU-Africa summit, on 29 November. Rephrasing the terms of his August speech in Rome, “Muammar Gaddafi yesterday warned that his country will no longer be a coastguard for Europe as he reiterated his demand for €5 billion a year from the EU to stop “black” migrants from overwhelming Europe”. The Maltese daily notes that “the EU shot down the prospect of paying anything of the sort for a deal on immigration”. Nevertheless, “Mr Gaddafi’s speech went straight to the heart of the problem faced by the leaders convened at the summit”.
