As the war in Gaza continues, with the death toll rising by the day, the European Union is struggling to adopt a clear common position on Israel. While some Member States express their growing frustration, others have decided to go it alone. On 17 July, Slovenia banned two Israeli ministers from the religious far-right, Itamar Ben-Gvir (national security) and Bezalel Smotrich (finance, defence), from entering its territory, accusing them of making "genocidal statements" and inciting "extreme violence and serious human rights violations". This measure – unprecedented in the EU – recalls similar sanctions imposed in early June by several countries, including the United Kingdom and Norway.
In the same month, Ireland became the first EU country to table a bill banning imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. Other countries, such as Sweden, are pushing the EU to impose sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers.
A conversation with investigative reporters Stefano Valentino and Giorgio Michalopoulos, who have dissected the dark underbelly of green finance for Voxeurop and won several awards for their work.
